Proudly rescuing All Collies in need

meet the breed - the collie!

Not just Lassie’s stunt double! The Collie is a graceful, intelligent herding breed originally from Scotland, known for its loyalty, agility, and that unmistakable flowing coat.  There are two main types: the Rough Collie, with a long, luxurious mane, and the Smooth Collie, with a shorter, sleek coat—but both share the same gentle spirit and sharp mind. Collies thrive on companionship, love to learn, and often seem to know what you're thinking before you do.

Why People Love Collies!

  1. Gentle Temperament
Collies are famously gentle, loyal, and affectionate. They're especially good with children and often described as “nanny dogs” because of their protective instincts.

  2. Intelligence
They're highly intelligent and trainable. This makes them great for obedience, agility, and even therapy work. They often pick up commands quickly and enjoy learning.

  3. Beautiful Appearance
Their long, flowing coats and expressive eyes make them one of the most striking dog breeds. They have a regal, elegant look that many people find irresistible.

  4. Strong Bond with Family
Collies are very people-oriented and thrive on companionship. They tend to form deep bonds with their families and are happiest when they’re included in daily life.

  5. Moderate Energy Level
While they enjoy play and walks, they’re not hyperactive. This makes them a good fit for families who want a dog that’s active but not overwhelming.

  6. Good Watchdogs
They’re alert and protective without being aggressive. They’ll bark to alert you of strangers but are usually friendly once they know someone is safe.

  7. Low Aggression
Collies are known for being non-aggressive and tolerant, which makes them great for multi-pet households or homes with small children.

Adopting a Rescue Collie can be a deeply rewarding experience—for both the dog and the adopter.

❤️ Why Adopt a Rescue Collie?

  1. Saving a Life
Adoption gives a dog a second chance at a happy life. Collies in rescue situations have been surrendered due to circumstances beyond their control.

  2. Gratitude and Loyalty
Rescue dogs often form incredibly strong bonds with their adopters. Collies, in particular, are known for their loyalty and sensitivity—they tend to thrive when they feel safe and loved.

  3. Temperament Already Known
Northeast Ohio Collie Rescue (NEOCR) assesses the dog’s personality, behavior, and health before adoption. This means you often know what you're getting—whether the dog is good with kids, other pets, or has specific needs.

  4. Lower Cost
Adoption fees are typically much lower than the cost of the veterinary care the dogs receive before adoption. Dogs from NEOCR will be spayed/neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped before adoption.

  5. Support from Northeast Ohio Collie Rescue
NEOCR provides ongoing support, advice, and resources to help adopters succeed. We are passionate about the breed and want the best for both the dog and the adopter!

  6. Avoiding Puppy Challenges
Many Collies in our rescue are adults, which means they’re often past the chewing and nipping stages of puppyhood.

  7. Promoting Ethical Pet Ownership
Adopting helps reduce demand for puppy mills and irresponsible breeding practices (“backyard breeders”). It’s a compassionate choice that supports animal welfare.

Adopting a Collie from NEOCR not only gives the dog a second chance—it also helps break the cycle of neglect and overbreeding from unethical breeders. Many adopters find that helping a dog heal and thrive is one of the most meaningful experiences of their lives.

Why Ethical Collie Breeders Are Important

  1. Breed Preservation
Reputable breeders are deeply committed to maintaining the Collie’s classic traits—gentle temperament, intelligence, and physical beauty—through careful selection and breeding practices.

  2. Health Screening
Ethical breeders test for genetic conditions common in Collies, such as Canine Eye Anomaly (CEA), MDR1 sensitivity, and hip dysplasia. This helps reduce the risk of inherited diseases and ensures healthier puppies.

  3. Reducing Demand for Puppy Mills and “Backyard Breeders”
By choosing ethical breeders, people help combat the harmful practices of puppy mills and backyard breeders, which often prioritize profit over animal welfare.
